In this passage, Paul is dealing with the issue of memories. As he writes his epistle to the Philippians, Paul’s memories of them rise to the surface. He gives voice to some things he remembers about these people. By the time Philippians is written, memories are about all Paul has. He is in a Roman prison awaiting his execution.
Approximately 250 years after Jesus was born in Bethlehem, there was a priest by the name of Valentine. He lived in Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius, who was committed to rebuilding the once-great Roman army. However, he believed it was important for men to volunteer for armed service, rather than drafting men into service against their will. But, given a choice, most young men in the Roman Empire refused to serve. They’d rather stay at home with their wives and children that go off into battle. Claudius came to believe that only single men would volunteer for service, so he issued a royal edict that banned all further marriages. He actually outlawed weddings in the Roman Empire, earning himself the nick-name Claudius the Cruel. Valentine thought it was ridiculous! One of his favorite duties as a priest was to marry people. So after Emperor Claudius passed his law, Valentine secretly continued performing marriage ceremonies. He would whisper the words of the ceremony, while listening for soldiers on the steps outside. One night, Valentine did hear footsteps at his door. The couple he was marrying escaped, but he was caught. He was thrown in jail and sentenced to death. Valentine tried to stay cheerful. Many of the young couples he had married came to visit him in jail. They threw flowers and notes up to his window. They wanted him to know that they, too, believed in love. One day, he received a visit from the daughter of one of the prison guards. Her father allowed her to visit him in his cell and they often sat and talked for hours. She believed he did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and performing weddings. On the day Valentine was to die, he left her a note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. He signed it, “Love from your Valentine.” That note started the custom of exchanging love notes on Valentine’s Day. It was written on the day he died, February 14, 269 A.D.
How serious are we as a nation about the sexual abuse of minors? The media are now asking whether Pope Benedict ought to have defrocked a Wisconsin priest accused of molesting a minor in the 1950s, a case which the police declined to prosecute in the 1970s and was brought to the Vatican's attention only as the priest lay dying in the 1990s. Well, it's a fair question. But what about the rest of us? Defrocking a priest will purify the Church (and we owe thanks to all those who have helped make this happen). But taking off the Roman collar will not prevent the man from abusing children. Only the law can do that. How serious is the law about sexual abuse of children and teens? I spent an afternoon trying to find out. I found out, for example, that according to a 2006 study by the Florida Office of Economic and Demographic Research, the majority of adults over the age of 24 who had sex with a minor over the age of 15 escaped jail. In fact, almost one out of six adults convicted of sexually battering a child under 12 received no prison sentence at all.
We're starting to get antsy about not having callers or people in our live chat during the show, so we've made the show a bit more relaxed and less frenetic. Today's topics explored 1)Cussing laws on the books of Pennsylvania and whether people should be arrested and serve time in jail just for cursing, 2) A story that is unprecedented but received very little attention from the national news media: A Columbia journalist denied permission to attend Harvard's prestigious Nieman program by the Obama administration due to the journalist's supposed "terrorist activities," 3) Artscape coming to Baltimore this weekend and running from July 16 - 18; 4) Roman Polanski extradition denied by the Swiss government, capping a long and tortured saga that began with Polanski pleading guilty to engaging in unlawful sex with a minor back in 1977, then fleeing the country, and 5) Lindsay Lohan is going to prison. Boo-hoo. No one guessed the quote from a famous play which came from none other than "The Glass Menagerie." That means our wonderful prizes --- a free flag T-shirt and a free Dr. Seuss book --- go back in the vault and wait for this show to gain some traction. Join us next week on Monday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. EST for a recap of news that seriously doesn't matter. Be there or be trivial.

I will be joined by Alexander Roman, a film director, editor and producer of the documentary, Reflections of the Past. Reflections of the Past steps into the lives Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme, two teenage girls who met during the year of 1952 in Christchurch Girls‘ High School. Pauline and Juliet became close with each other. Discovering things in common and shared passions. Their home lives slowly began to crumble from 1953 to 1954. Increased tension with Pauline and her mother. Juliet’s parents getting a divorce and plans to leave New Zealand. The separation of Pauline and Juliet was imminent. The murder of Pauline’s mother occurred in Victoria Park on Tuesday, June 22, 1954 overlooking the city of Christchurch. A trial found both girls guilty and imprisonment was set forth. Upon serving five years in prison, Pauline and Juliet were released. This film will bring the past to the present with newspaper images, reenactment footage, revisiting places Pauline & Juliet once knew in Christchurch, and interviews providing an open discussion regarding the murder case and relationship of Pauline & Juliet. We are going to discuss how our souls ultimately desire union and when we are faced with separation, the drastic things that can be done to not have to experience being separated from those we deeply love. A powerful sharing without a doubt, this will be. Visit http://www.reflectionsofthepast.net for more information and to watch a trailer.

Last week we met Brother Paul - the great Apostle who was gloriously and dramatically arrested by grace on the road to Damascus. He went in an instant from breathing threats of death against the Church to becoming its most prominent spokesman. From a Roman Prison he writes this letter to the Saints at Ephesus. The letter can be easily divided into 3 distinct parts 1. Our Resources in Christ 2. Our Responsibility to Christ 3. Our Retaliation against the Enemy Today we begin this first section which deals with our vast resources in Christ.
